The eBook industry is getting recognized by the Thai publishers and distributors as a result of the distribution of smartphones, tablets, and i-devices (i.e. iPhone, iPad, iPod). Currently, the hottest format for Thai eBooks is PDF which facilitates the zooming in and out of small texts, spacing between characters, vowels, tone marks, and page break of Thai words accurately. However, reflowable content with the EPUB format will be crucial to improve the reading experience for Thai readers.

Several publishers and distributors want to increase their market share by monetizing Thai books through their online channels. Asiabooks is one of the leading brick-and-mortar and virtual bookstores that started their business early in 2001, and they sell both Thai and English books. It is also now owned by Khun Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, the patriarch of the second-richest family in Thailand. However, B2S has seriously upped their game in the ever-increasing market in the past year. According to B2S, iPhone owners in Thailand have reached 1,000,000 along with more than 300,000 tablet owners. Considering these numbers, the eBook market in Thailand has a lot of potential for any competitor.
Based on my own experience reading Thai eBooks and e-magazines of PDF format, the print layout quality can be comfortably read on larger eReading devices with 10”+ large screens or personal computer monitors. Zooming in and out distorts font display. However, on smaller screen devices, reading on the touchscreen devices, the reader is forced to swipe their fingers to calibrate the optimal page display and the text becomes blurred each time the page is scrolled up and down.
While B2S is exclusively selling PDFs, another popular format for eReading devices is EPUB, which is reflowable and suitable for eReading devices of any size. With better text display on any screen size, Adobe Digital Editions version 1.8 Preview makes the Thai font stand out flawlessly. Against all odds, Thai publishing insiders harmoniously predict that the eBook market will overcome the market share from paper books, much like Amazon’s eBook sales phenomenon in the U.S.A.
Obviously, there is still room to grow for eBooks in Thailand. Certain issues hinder Thai market growth such as the inflexibility of font display on small screen devices (for PDF) and the limited catalogue of readable collections (EPUB). If only several issues aforementioned are fixed appropriately with the optimal utilization of web browser that nicely supports reflowable content, a plethora of innovative technologies will provide new writers and small presses with new opportunities. Most importantly, the writer remains the key factor who enhances the reader’s experience.
สถานการณ์ตลาด eBooks ในประเทศไทย
ปัจจุบันหนังสืออิเล็กโทรนิกส์หรือ eBook กำลังได้รับความนิยมมากขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ จากผู้จัดจำหน่ายและสำนักพิมพ์ในประเทศไทย เนื่องจากผลพลอยได้ของยอดจำหน่ายสมาร์ทโฟน แท็บเล็ต และอุปกรณ์ตระกูลไอต่าง ๆ (ทั้ง iPhone, iPad, iPod) ทั้งนี้ ฟอร์แมทไฟล์ที่ได้รับความนิยมมากที่สุดสำหรับการอ่านภาษาไทยคงหนีไม่พ้น PDF ซึ่งทำให้เกิดความคล่องตัวในการอ่านแบบซูมเข้าและออกอย่างอิสระโดยลดปัญหาเรื่องการเว้นวรรคระหว่างสระและวรรณยุกต์ การเว้นระยะช่องไฟระหว่างคำ รวมถึงการตัดคำในการขึ้นบรรทัดใหม่ได้ถูกต้องและแม่นยำ

จากการวิเคราะห์ของผู้ที่อยู่ในวงการสื่อสิ่งพิมพ์หลายท่าน ทุกคนต่างลงความเห็นว่าตลาดหนังสืออิเล็คโทรนิกส์จะทำให้เกิดปรากฏการณ์แย่งส่วนแบ่งการตลาดจากหนังสือกระดาษในอนาคตอันใกล้ ดังที่เกิดขึ้นมาแล้วในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาที่ยอดขายอีบุ๊คแซงหนังสือที่พิมพ์ด้วยกระดาษบน Amazon ตามที่ได้กล่าวไปแล้วข้างต้น สถานการณ์อีบุ๊คในประเทศไทยยังสามารถเติบโตได้อย่างรวดเร็วยิ่งขึ้น
ความไม่คล่องตัวเรื่องการแสดงตัวอักษรบนอุปกรณ์การอ่านที่มีหน้าจอขนาดเล็กและจำนวนหนังสือที่ยังมีจำกัดในวงแคบ ล้วนเป็นปัญหาที่รอการแก้ไข
