One Tablet Per Child

In the wake of “One Tablet Per Child (OTPC)”, big efforts from the Thai Ministry of Education are in motion to provide tablets for students. The first batch of 55,000 tablets will be sent to primary students in eight provinces. Two billion baht (equivalent to US$60,000,000) is also being allotted to supply the tablets for seventh grade students next year.

Auspicious 2012

With these auspicious blessings from the Thai government, Thai education seems to kick start 2012 with a positive attitude to develop the overall learning experience for students. The tablet’s specifications promise future support of new technology and multimedia contents. Natt Garun of Digital Trends reports how the tablet manufacturer from China, Shenzhen Scope, has reached its production capacity at 30,000 units per day and 80% of the production will be exclusively reserved for OTPC alone.

Possible Purchasing Decision of Digital Content

According to Education Minister, Prof. Suchart Thada-Thamrongvech, the students are allowed to take the tablet home and own it after three years. The student’s ownership can then be translated as parents’ possible decision to buy additional learning content for their children. With the additional donation of 600 Apple’s iPads to 20 classrooms, the digital market will certainly look very bright this year.

Growth in Thai eBook Market

Having relished at the bright future of the young students of Thailand, it is equally delightful to learn that there are great potentials for Thai eBook market, according to The Nation. The online newspaper provides the general background of the current eBook situation and refers to the astounding number of more than 200,000 online subscribers who can upload their eBooks to websites and read free books, magazines, and catalogs.

Chula Book Center

There is also a good sign from another major book retailer in Thailand, apart from Asiabooks and B2S, who we mentioned earlier in our blog. Chula Book Center, one of the biggest textbook stores in Thailand, is rapidly expanding their eBook business expecting to offer more than 1,000 eBooks at the end of this year according to Bangkok Post. However, these bookstores still only sell content in PDF format, which is not suitable for all eReading devices.

Thai EPUB Initiative

All in all, I stay optimistic about the future of digital content and eBook growth in Thailand. Content provider and developer, in my opinion, are also one of the key factors to make it possible. With our Thai EPUB initiative, we are fully committed to this mission of creating the EPUB book that will professionally display reflowable content. We believe that with the EPUB3 slowly coming into adoption, this dream can be recognized.
