The List That Has Gone Viral

Newscast

Sometimes, it can be a bit tough to pick the most interesting topics when there are too many. Filtering certain ones results in abandoning several potential ones that can benefit readers. Nevertheless, judging from the overzealous popularity on the number of shares of an article provided by Forbes, I am confident that every party in the publishing industry must read this news with a sheer sense of excitement. The article has been shared on Facebook over 2,200 times at the time of writing. However, there are other things you should pay attention to as long as the insiders are willing to share reports of their operations and progress.

Erotica Author Crowned the Highest Earner

Gold

First thing first, you might come to realize the mega million of dollars shelled out to glamorize Romance and Erotica genres. Like it or not, E.L. James has been inducted in the hall of fame as “The Top-Earning Author of 2013.” Her massive income, estimated on sales data between June 2012 and June 2013, amassed $95 million. To each and everyone’s favorite cup of tea, her book is clearly not for everyone’s taste when most of the comments on the website explicitly criticize James’ writing profession. Somehow, her subject matter has triggered her fans to push the purchase button to support her more generously than the critics. Fortunately, I was able to voice my own reason before hitting Book Riot’s link.

“A Smack of Reality”

Man

Regardless, thanks to Joanna Cabot of TeleRead who echoes the critical voice Jill Guccini, there are many more insights to learn from her broad-minded interpretation of this list. Forget about the critics for a moment, this list exhibits a “smack of reality” that reflects what actual readers are willing to spend their time enjoying and buying. These readers go out to the vendors and pay for their pleasurable reading. Apart from James’ apparent success, Jill analyzes the bestselling authors individually and clarifies how a mixture of genres represents a much wider variety in the list.

Diversity in Genre Popularity

Crayons

To be fair, the 50/50 proportion split between male and female authors in the top 10 might signify equality that can further be translated into the equal amount of successful authors. Apart from adult’s category, this list reinstates the success of children’s and young adult’s authors-Suzanne Collins, J. K. Rowling, Jeff Kinney, and Rick Riordan. The fact that Bill O’Reilly also makes it to the list indicates that non-fiction is still a capable contestant in the competition. To interpret this list in an optimistic sense, everyone is reading and they have supported their authors; namely, buying their favorite author’s books.

Controllable Factors of Success

Back to Forbes article, it is refreshing to hear Michael Pietsch, CEO of Hachette Book Group, say that “the surprise and originality that lead to the giant scale.” To look at the formula of success what worked in the past might not be applied well in the ‘dynamics of book retailing and the frictionless eBook purchasing environment’. Michael Norris, publishing analyst of Simba Information, concludes that “there is nothing to quantify luck.” Although not everyone can rake in the amount of income that E.L. James has achieved this year, innately all authors possess the very gist that needs to be communicated to their readers whether they have a niche audience or mass readership.
