โอกาสของนักเขียนไทยระดับโลก
ในประเทศไทยมีนักเขียนหนังสือที่มีชื่อเสียงที่มีผลงานติดอันดับขายดีที่น่าสนใจก็มากมาย แต่การจะเป็นนักเขียนที่มีชื่อเสียงไปทั่วประเทศถือว่าเป็นเรื่องยาก มีนักเขียนคนไทยน้อยคนที่ประสบความสำเร็จและมีคนรู้จักไปทั่วโลก แต่มีงานเขียนของนักเขียนชื่อดังสองท่าน ที่ได้รับการแปลเป็นภาษาต่างประเทศและมีวางจำหน่ายบนร้าน Amazon นักเขียนท่านแรกคือ ม.ร.ว.คึกฤทธิ์ ปราโมช ผู้แต่งหนังสือเรื่องสี่แผ่นดิน (Four Reigns) ซึ่งเป็นนวนิยายอิงประวัติศาสตร์ไทยเกี่ยวกับเรื่องราวของตัวละครเอกคือแม่พลอยผู้ซึ่งใช้ชีวิตในช่วงรัชกาลที่ 5 ถึงรัชกาลที่ 8 หนังสือ นักเขียนท่านที่สองคือ ชาติ กอบจิตติ ผู้แต่งเรื่องคำพิพากษา (The Judgment) และ พันธุ์หมาบ้าที่ได้รับการแปลเป็นภาษาอังกฤษโดย Marcel Barang ชื่อเรื่อง (Mad Dogs and Co) และภาษาฝรั่งเศสในชื่อ (Chiens Fous) ผลงานเรื่องคำพิพากษาได้ส่งให้ชาติชนะรางวัลนักเขียนซีไรท์ในปี 2524
โอกาสในการสร้างชื่อเสียงให้กับตนเองไม่ได้มีเฉพาะในประเทศเท่านั้น ถึงแม้ว่าหนังสือตัวอย่างจะมีจำหน่ายเป็นรูปเล่มอย่างเดียว แต่ก็แสดงให้เห็นว่าผลงานของนักเขียนไทยสามารถขายได้ เนื่องจากปัจจุบันตลาดอีบุ๊คกำลังเติบโตมาก และในเว็บอเมซอนก็มียอดจำหน่ายอีบุ๊คมากกว่าหนังสือที่พิมพ์เป็นเล่ม การปรับตัวให้เข้ากับยุคสมัยจึงเป็นสิ่งที่สำคัญ เพราะไม่ว่าคนอ่านจะอ่านผลงานของนักเขียนจากไหน สิ่งสำคัญที่สุดก็คือเนื้อหาที่อยู่ข้างในมากกว่า ไม่แน่ในอนาคตอันใกล้ เราอาจได้เห็นหนังสืออีบุ๊คแปลของคนไทยขายดีติดอันดับ หนังสือขายดี บนอเมซอนก็เป็นได้

In Thailand, a lot of well-known authors have had bestselling works but to succeed is very difficult. To succeed in international level is a much more difficult task for Thai authors. Two prominent literary figures whose works have been translated into English and published on Amazon are M.R. Kukrit Pramoj and Chart Korbjitti. M.R. (Mom Rajawongse literally translated as The Honorable) Kukrit Pramoj and Chart Korbjitti. M.R.Kukrit was best known for Four Reigns (Si Phandin) which tells the story of the female protagonist, Mae Ploy, a young girl who has lived from the reign of King Rama V to King Rama VIII. Chart Korbjittti is another internationally acclaimed author who has won S.E.A. Write Award. The first award went to The Judgment (Khamphiphaksa) in 1981. Not only his novels are translated into English, the ones in French are also available on Amazon.
Having their works published on Amazon, it shows that Thai novels can sell internationally. However, due to the fact that eBook market is rapidly growing and its sales have outperformed the print titles, adapting to modern technology is important. No matter which author’ novels are being picked, it’s the content inside the book that counts. Who knows? We might see Thai translated novels in eBook format on Amazon’s bestselling chart in the near future.
Chart Korbjitti gave an interview with Thairath newspaper how digital media have changed the publishing industry. He expresses his opinion about digital media that everything must change. Giving examples how the invention of paper by the Chinese had changed the way we wrote formerly on stones.
“The content of literary works still lasts. The change only affects the recording format and reading style,” he concludes.
