BB eBooks Newsletter – April 26, 2013

Dear Friend,

Now that we have recovered from Thailand’s collective Songkran hangover, we have some time to send out our newsletter. Everyone survived except for the retaining wall near our office, which was rammed by a drunken hooligan in a pickup truck during Bangkok’s wild celebration. Luckily, our landlord is picking up the tab, so no need to pass any added overhead onto our valued clients.

Self-Publishing a Big Hit at the London Book Fair

No longer relegated to second-class citizen status, self-publishers took the London Book Fair by storm. It’s no surprise either, since independent publishing is a booming business while legacy publishers are considering panhandling in Washington for a bailout. Heavyweights in the indie publishing world such as David Gaughran, Orna Ross, Ben Galley, and Joanna Penn have a great video interview that you can watch here.

BB eBooks was proud to do the interior design on Choosing a Self-Publishing Service 2013 for the Alliance of Independent Authors. Speaking of self-publishing services, please be on the lookout for scammers. David G. has a great rundown on a not-so-great service provider to authors. The Choosing a Self-Publishing Service book has great analysis on the good, the bad, and the ugly of the eBook business. A good time to learn what’s what, since Amazon is looking to open in Russia in the near future. Of course, the most important people to keep in mind during your writing is your readers.

World Book Capital - Bangkok?

Flying Books

Turning our attention to our home country, did you know that Bangkok was the UNESCO World Book Capital for 2013? BB eBooks didn’t know either until the ceremony this week. Please have a look at Gof’s visit to the events and what it means for the future of the written word in Thailand. While the promise of EPUB and reflowable eBooks was notably absent, at least there was some interest in electronic reading. It looks like BB eBooks will have to try harder to evangelize all things eBook in Thailand.

Formatting Fun

Keanu

Ever wonder why BB eBooks chooses different paragraph styles for different types of content when our shop works on your eBooks? Perhaps you did not, but differences in paragraph formatting can subconsciously instruct the reader on how best to view your content. First-line indent paragraphs (where there is a short indent on the opening line of the paragraph and no whitespace) provides a more natural flow, while block paragraphs (no indent but a blank line of whitespace separation between paragraphs) allow the reader to obtain discrete pieces of information. Learn more about different paragraph styles on our blog.

To Our Boston Clients

Boston

We hope that everything is normal following last week’s most tragic turn of events. Our hearts go out to all of you. Never forget!

Yours sincerely,

The BB eBooks Team
