The sharp rattle of the blower motor pushing air through the ventilation duct became a muted rumble above him. He phased out the droning from the speakers and traveled to another reality.

The Administrator pulled up a query on the Students’ table display, inquiring how many D-orbital electrons were located in the element of Cobalt. For his neglect on the final day of the Quantum Mechanics for Machine Operators class, the Administrator sent Alan an electrical shock through his tether. Alan was jolted alive by the cable running through the jack embedded in his forearm.
